High Court dismisses Msaka’s petition bid against Tulinje Muluzi’s election victory for Machinga Machinga Likwenu Constituency

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The High Court in Blantyre has dismissed a petition filed by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leaders Bright Msaka and MacDonald Makanjira challenging the election of Tulinje Muluzi as Member of Parliament for Machinga Likwenu Constituency.

The petition, which was filed against the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), alleged irregularities in the electoral process.

In his ruling, Judge Jack N’riva dismissed the petition on the grounds that the petitioners failed to follow the due procedure as stipulated by law.

The judge’s ruling means that Tulinje Muluzi of the United Democratic Front (UDF) will continue to serve as the Member of Parliament for Machinga Likwenu Constituency, as declared by MEC.

The petitioners had cited several issues, including the opening and leaving of ballot papers unsealed before election day, denial of access to party monitors to verify the ballot papers, and continued campaigning by Muluzi after the official campaign period had ended.

However, the court’s decision has brought an end to the matter, at least for now.

This case is among several electoral disputes that have been filed in Malawi’s courts following the September 16 general elections.

The judiciary has been working to clear the backlog of cases, with 90 electoral cases filed and 45 disposed of as of October 24, 2025.
