Stuart Ligomeka: The bold voice against corruption Malawi desperately needs

By Jones Gadama

In a refreshing and courageous stance, Deputy Chief Secretary to the Government, Stuart Ligomeka, has openly condemned the corrupt practices that have long plagued Malawi’s Civil Service.

His metaphorical comparison of some public officers to “vampires” preying on innocent Malawians is not only vivid but profoundly accurate. Ligomeka’s remarks resonate deeply with the frustrations of ordinary citizens who suffer daily from the greed and exploitation of those entrusted to serve them.

His boldness and clarity mark him as precisely the kind of leader that President Peter Mutharika sought to spearhead the fight against corruption—a fight that the nation cannot afford to lose.

Corruption in Malawi’s civil service has been a festering wound for years, eroding public trust, weakening institutions, and slowing development.

When public officers demand money before rendering services, they transform from servants of the people into predators.

Ligomeka’s analogy of civil servants as vampires is not a mere exaggeration or a dramatic flourish; it is a stark description of a system that sucks the lifeblood out of the very people it is meant to serve.

This parasitic behavior undermines professionalism, delays service delivery, and ultimately stifles the progress of the nation.

The significance of Ligomeka’s remarks lies not only in their bluntness but also in the timing and context. Speaking during the official launch of the Civil Service Commission’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, his words underline a critical moment for Malawi’s governance.

The plan’s theme, ‘Towards a More Efficient and Effective Digital Recruitment Process,’ highlights a commitment to transparency, fairness, and meritocracy.

These are essential tools in the battle against corruption, and Ligomeka’s condemnation spotlights the urgent need for systemic change.

President Peter Mutharika’s administration has consistently placed fighting corruption at the forefront of its agenda.

His leadership recognizes that corruption is the biggest barrier to Malawi’s development and the main cause of widespread poverty and inequality. However, the president cannot wage this battle alone.

It requires the support and courage of individuals like Stuart Ligomeka—leaders who are unafraid to speak truth to power and confront entrenched malpractices head-on.

Ligomeka’s vocal opposition to corruption sends a powerful message to other civil servants and private sector players who engage in similar unethical behaviors.

Corruption is not confined to government offices; it permeates many private sector operations as well, where bribery, favoritism, and fraud create an uneven playing field and discourage honest business practices.

The entire fabric of Malawi’s socio-economic development is compromised when corruption becomes normalized in both public and private spheres.

The Civil Service Commission’s strategic plan, as articulated by Chairperson Arthur Chibwana, promises a merit-based system where appointments, promotions, and disciplinary actions are guided strictly by fairness and justice. This is a laudable vision that, if implemented with integrity, could restore confidence in public institutions.

Yet, the success of such reforms depends heavily on the determination and moral conviction of leaders like Ligomeka who are willing to call out wrongdoing and demand accountability.

It is essential to recognize that tackling corruption is not just about punishing offenders but about transforming the culture within the civil service and beyond.

This transformation requires leadership that is transparent, accountable, and committed to ethical governance.

Ligomeka’s condemnation of corrupt civil servants as “vampires” is a call to action for all stakeholders to reject complacency and demand higher standards of conduct.

Furthermore, the analogy serves to remind us that corruption is not a victimless crime; it drains resources, discourages investment, and ultimately harms the most vulnerable members of society.

When public officers exploit ordinary citizens for personal gain, they betray the trust placed in them and perpetuate cycles of poverty and inequality. The fight against corruption is therefore a fight for justice, dignity, and the future prosperity of Malawi.

President Mutharika’s leadership has already shown a commitment to these principles, but the president’s efforts require widespread support. Leaders like Ligomeka provide the moral backbone necessary to challenge corrupt networks and implement reforms that will strengthen governance.

Their courage to speak out publicly against these practices inspires others to follow suit and fosters a culture of integrity.

The private sector also has a critical role in this fight. Corruption in business dealings not only distorts markets but also undermines efforts to build a fair and competitive economy.

Ethical business practices must be championed alongside public service reforms if Malawi is to achieve sustainable development.

This calls for a collective effort from government, civil society, and the private sector to eradicate corruption in all its forms.

Stuart Ligomeka’s bold condemnation of corrupt civil servants as “vampires” is a clarion call for change. His remarks reflect the pain and frustration of Malawians who suffer under corrupt systems and highlight the urgent need for honest and courageous leadership.

He exemplifies the kind of principled leadership that President Peter Mutharika envisioned for Malawi—a leadership that prioritizes integrity, transparency, and service to the people.

The fight against corruption is arduous and complex, but with leaders like Ligomeka standing firm and a president committed to reform, Malawi has hope. It is imperative that all sectors unite to support these efforts and reject the corrupt practices that have long held the nation back.

Only through sustained commitment and collective action can Malawi build a civil service and a society that truly serve the interests of all its citizens, free from the sting of corruption’s vampire grip.

Lilongwe woman arrested for scalding husband over dispute of hiring housemaid

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police in Lilongwe at Area 23 have arrested 34-year-old Bernadetta Awali for allegedly pouring boiling water on her husband, Yamikani Jonasi, following a domestic dispute over hiring a maid.

According to police, the couple, who have been married for seven years, had been arguing after Jonasi insisted that they engage domestic help.

The suspect is said to have raised concerns that Bernadetta was struggling to balance household responsibilities with her business commitments.

However, Awali reportedly rejected the idea, fearing that her husband might become involved with the maid—an insecurity she linked to their own relationship history.

Awali previously worked as a maid, and Jonasi left his former wife to be with her, a situation that authorities say contributed to her distrust.

The disagreement escalated on the day of the incident, with Awali allegedly assaulting her husband by pulling his private parts before scalding him with boiling water.

Jonasi sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Kamuzu Central Hospital, where medical officials describe his condition as extremely painful but stable.

Police have confirmed that Awali is in custody and will be charged once investigations are complete.

Are Summer House’s Amanda and Kyle Still Together? Inside Marriage Rumors

Summer House fans have been part of Kyle Cooke and Amanda Batula’s relationship from the very beginning — and have weathered every storm with them, including rumors of a split.

While Cooke, 43, and Batula, 34, faced many bumps on their road to marriage since tying the knot in September 2021, they appeared to have mellowed out. That was until earlier this fall when speculation sparked that the couple were living apart amid marriage woes.

A source exclusively told Us Weekly in November that Cooke and Batula were still living together — but admitted that they were “going through a challenging time.”

Despite their struggles, the insider said Cooke and Batula are “both committed to making the relationship work.”

Cooke and Batula, meanwhile, have hinted at their recent hardships in teasers from the upcoming season 10 of the Bravo series and online.

Batula and Cooke butted heads over their future during the season 9 Summer House reunion in May, especially over Cooke’s desire to be a father despite being busy in his career.

“He’s gonna have to be on my page. If he could grow the baby, it could be on his timeline. But it’s happening in this body,” Batula exclusively told Us at the time, noting she was frustrated over how Cooke addressed the topic throughout the season.

She explained, “There was a lot of stuff on this season that was like, him wanting to be a father, and, like, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, but he’s having this conversation with other people, and not the person that’s supposed to carry his child.”

“So if he was actively [saying], ‘Hey, I want to have kids. Like, we should start trying to have kids,’ that would be different,” Batula added. “That’s not a conversation that we’re having.”

She then argued,“[Kyle has] been DJing, he’s gone every weekend. Like, in what world exactly? I know that he wants to be a father one day, but I know he’s not ready. And if he was ready, you know, I think he would be like, ‘I’m ready to have a family.’”

The couple seemingly quieted split rumors — at least temporarily — when they sat next to each other at the “Summer House Always Wins” panel during BravoCon 2025 on November 16.

During the three-day convention in Las Vegas, their Summer House costar Lindsay Hubbard also shut down speculation that the pair hit a rocky spot.

“It’s like any relationship, there’s ups and downs,” Hubbard, 39, exclusively told Us of Cooke and Batula’s dynamic on November 14. “I know that they’re so in love with each other, and they’re very much together. Like, come on.”

Are Amanda Batula and Kyle Cooke Living Together?

Batula poked fun at rumors she and Cooke are no longer living under the same roof by showing off her alleged new pad via Instagram.

“Hey guys, it’s taken me a while to talk about this, but I just wanted to confirm the rumors that Kyle and I are living separately. This is my new house,” she said on December 7, panning around a small dark area that was later revealed as a children’s playhouse.

Batula teased, “I just wanted to show you guys. This is my new house. It’s small, it’s kind of all that I can afford.”

The reality star took it a step further, showing off a wreath on the small house, saying, “I decorated for the holidays, I’m really excited. I could really use your support at this time and some privacy while we figure this out. Thanks so much.”

‘Summer House’ Season 10 Trailer Teases Amanda Batula and Kyle Cooke’s Drama

Bravo released the Summer House season 10 supertease trailer on December 8, much of which depicted tension between the only married couple in the house.

“I wanted him to stop going out and partying, and he found a career [as a DJ] where he goes out late and parties,” Batula said in a voiceover while speaking about Cooke’s choice of career.

Cooke proceeded to tell BFF Carl Radke that his wife “couldn’t care less” about his DJ career, confessing, “I don’t know what matters to her anymore.”

Elsewhere in the trailer, Cooke and Batula got into a full-blown fight about their relationship. “You know what I actually think we have an issue with? Compatibility, chemistry, intimacy,” Cooke claimed. “What about that s***?”

Kyle Cooke Addresses Fan Sleepover Allegations

During the season 10 Summer House trailer, Batula told pals Hubbard and Ciara Miller that Cooke fell asleep at a fan’s house after one of his DJ gigs and allegedly “came home at 6:30 in the morning.”

“That’s f***ing insane,” Miller, 29, said in response, however, Cooke has since denied his wife’s claims.

“There’s no excuse for staying out as late as I did, but I want to be clear that I did not sleep at a fan’s apartment,” Cooke told People in a statement on December 9. “I was at an event that Amanda chose not to attend, which moved to a bar and then to an after-party.”

He claimed, “I don’t use anything to keep myself wired, so I think I ended up falling asleep on a couch, and suddenly it was almost 6 a.m. Do I regret the situation? Absolutely. But that’s the truth and full extent of what happened.”

Summer House premieres on Bravo February 3, 2026.
