2025 Chipiku League: Eagles Reserve in Do-or-Die clash against Airborne

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Blue Eagles Reserve FC face a do-or-die encounter this afternoon when they take on Airborne Rangers FC in the final match of the 2025 Chipiku Stores Premier Division League at Nankhaka Stadium.

The Malawi Police Service-sponsored side must avoid defeat to keep their championship hopes alive as they battle neck-and-neck with Extreme FC of Mchinji for the league title.

The decisive fixture is expected to attract senior officials from Chipiku Stores, the Central Region Football Association (CRFA), and the Malawi Police Service.

Extreme FC climbed to the summit last week after edging past Eagles Reserve on goal difference, with both teams tied on 62 points.

The Mchinji-based side, who have completed their league programme, have scored 59 goals and conceded 21, giving them a goal difference of 28.

Blue Eagles Reserve, who still have one match to play, have scored 52 goals and conceded 21 for a superior goal difference of 31.

A draw would be enough to see them reclaim top spot and secure the championship.

Eagles Reserve assistant coach Alupheus Nyoni described the match as a final and said the players are fully aware of what is at stake.

“This is our last game and it is very crucial. We cannot afford anything less than a positive result. The boys look good in camp and are eager to play. Pressure has been there throughout the season, but this is a do-or-die game and we believe we will be crowned champions,” said Nyoni.

The cops will draw confidence from the first-round meeting in Salima, where they came from behind to register a 4–3 victory over Airborne Rangers.

Eagles Reserve have enjoyed an impressive campaign following their promotion from the CRFA FAM Moto Division One last season, holding their own against long-established sides in the league. They have won 18 matches, drawn eight and lost three.

Airborne Rangers, however, are also expected to put up a strong fight after dramatically securing their survival in the league during the closing stages of the season.

Airborne Rangers General Secretary Madalo Mkwate admitted that the relegation battle was a wake-up call for the Salima-based side.

“Finding ourselves in a relegation fight was not pleasing for a team with our history. Complacency nearly cost us, but I commend the mid-season signings—they really helped us. We must prepare better during the next pre-season,” said Mkwate.

He added that the final match will be fiercely contested as Airborne Rangers aim to finish the season on a high note.

The Flying Lions are currently 11th on the table with 36 points, having won 10 matches, drawn six and lost 13. They have scored 46 goals and conceded 52.

The winners of this year’s MK25 million Chipiku Stores Premier Division League will receive MK8 million, a trophy and gold medals.

The runners-up will pocket MK3 million, third place MK1.5 million, while the fourth-placed team will earn MK1 million.

Regardless of the outcome between Blue Eagles Reserve and Airborne Rangers, Extreme FC are assured of promotion to the NBS Bank National Division League, as reserve sides are not eligible to compete in the second tier.

Chilobwe United appoint Kafoteka as head coach for 2026/27 season

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Chilobwe United Football Club have confirmed the appointment of Elvis Kafoteka as head coach ahead of the 2026/27 football season.

The Blantyre based side is set to compete in the National Bank Division League after earning promotion into the Southern Premier Division league.

According to the club, Kafoteka has been engaged on a one year contract as part of efforts to strengthen the technical department in line with league requirements.

In an interview with MaraviPost publication, Kafoteka acknowledged his appointment and outlined the expectations placed upon him by the club and he said his principal assignment is to guide Chilobwe United into Malawi’s elite league, the FDH Premiership.

“It is true that I have been given a one year contract and the main task is to ensure that the team gains promotion to the FDH Premiership,” said Kafoteka.

Kafoteka takes over from Jimmy Chikulekule, who was instrumental in helping the club secure promotion into the NBS Bank National Division League.

However, Chikulekule has been reassigned to the assistant coach role after failing to meet the minimum coaching qualifications required to serve as head coach at this level.

The arrangement allows the club to comply with league regulations while retaining Chikulekule’s technical input and institutional knowledge.

Kafoteka brings considerable experience, having previously served as head coach for FOMO FC, Extreme FC, Eagle Strikers, Chikwawa United and Chitipa United.

Chombo satisfied with Bullets Women’s season after derby win over Wanderers Queens

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women’s coach Maggie Chombo has expressed satisfaction with her team’s performance in the current National Bank Premiership season, describing it as a positive foundation for the future.

Chombo made the remarks after her side edged Mighty Wanderers Queens 1-0 in a closely contested Blantyre derby played on Saturday afternoon at Mpira Stadium.

The Bullets mentor said although the season did not start as planned, the team showed great improvement as the campaign progressed, particularly in the second round of the league.

She explained that the slow start in the first round was a learning phase for the squad but the response in the second round has given her confidence heading into the next season.

The match was decided in the second half when Triza Chiwere found the back of the net in the 58 minute, scoring the only goal in what proved to be a tight and physical derby encounter.

Chiwere’s goal sealed Bullets Women’s second victory over Wanderers Queens this season, having also beaten their rivals 1-0 in the first round meeting.

Chombo praised her players for their discipline and determination, noting that derby matches are always difficult regardless of league position.

On the other hand, Mighty Wanderers Queens head coach Thom Kazembe admitted his side still needs more work ahead of the upcoming season.

Kazembe said the team is in a rebuilding phase and promised that Wanderers Queens will return stronger and more competitive next season.

He also raised concerns over officiating, saying improvements are needed to ensure the league maintains high standards and fairness.

Despite the defeat, Kazembe remains optimistic, stressing that the challenges faced this season will help shape a better team in the future.

Following the result, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women’s sit third on the National Bank Premiership table with 31 points from 16 matches, while Mighty Wanderers Queens are seventh with 23 points from the same number of games.

Jeremiah Jumbe Pushes for Blantyre Bypass Road to Accelerate City Development

Jeremiah Jumbe

By Dorica Mtenje

LILONGWE (MaraviPost) — Blantyre South East Member of Parliament Jeremiah Jumbe has called on the government to prioritize construction of a Blantyre bypass road, saying the project is essential for easing congestion and boosting the city’s long-term development.

Speaking in an interview with The MaraviPost on Wednesday, Jumbe said the proposed road would reduce traffic pressure in the city center and open new areas for investment, residential growth, and commercial expansion.

Jumbe argued that development efforts currently taking place in major cities particularly Lilongwe must be matched with similar infrastructure projects in Blantyre to ensure balanced national progress.

“Road infrastructure is a key driver of development,” he said. “I would love to see government continue the development agenda that President Peter Mutharika launched in 2019. Constructing a bypass road for Blantyre would significantly align the city with the improvements we are seeing elsewhere.”

The lawmaker noted that Blantyre’s rapid population growth and increasing vehicle traffic demand modern road networks to support economic productivity.

Jumbe also emphasized that opening new transport corridors would stimulate private sector activity, attract investors, and create job opportunities for local communities.

Residents and business owners have long expressed concerns over traffic congestion in Blantyre, especially during peak hours. A bypass road has been proposed several times over the past decade, but implementation has stalled due to funding limitations and shifting government priorities.

Jumbe said he intends to lobby both the Ministry of Transport and Parliament’s Public Works Committee to revive feasibility studies and push the project back onto the national agenda.

“The people of Blantyre deserve modern infrastructure and we cannot grow our economy if our roads remain outdated and overwhelmed.”he said.

MZUNI dominates NBM TESSAM Sports Festival

MZUNI celebrate their wins

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Mzuzu University (MZUNI) emerged as the overall winner of the Tertiary Students Sports Association of Malawi (TESSAM) Weekend Sports Festival, held on Saturday and Sunday at the University of Malawi in Zomba in a competition designed to scout athletes for the 2026 CUCSA Games in Botswana.

Zomba NBM Plc Service Centre Manager, Tawina Malata, expressed pride in the Bank’s role in supporting Malawi’s sporting youth.

“These games were specifically organized to identify players who will represent Malawi next year. National Bank’s support made it possible for all these universities to come together and compete at this scale. We are grateful for their commitment to youth development and sports excellence,” said Biya.

MZUNI Sports Director, Thomas Movetie, whose institution delivered the strongest overall performance, described the victory as a proud moment for the university.

“We are extremely proud of what our athletes have achieved. Their hard work has paid off, and it shows the strength and determination of the MZUNI community. We also appreciate National Bank Plc for stepping in to support university sports and helping create opportunities for young athletes across the country,” said Movetie.
