UTM criticizes DPP’s mid-year budget, warns against continued economic mismanagement

UTM president Dalitso Kabambe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The United Transformation Movement (UTM) party has strongly criticized the 2025/26 Mid-Year Budget, accusing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government of continuing what it describes as a “failed economic path” left behind by the former Malawi Congress Party (MCP) administration.

In a statement released today and signed by UTM Director of Finance and Economic Affairs Simon Mwayang’ana, the party highlighted the fragility of Malawi’s economy, citing rising food prices, foreign exchange shortages, growing public debt, increasing unemployment, and deepening poverty that continues to keep the country among the poorest in the world.

UTM acknowledged that the DPP inherited these challenges from the previous MCP government but stressed that the new administration must now take full responsibility for addressing them.

The party criticized the mid-year budget for failing to deliver solutions, arguing that the measures outlined fail to respond to the country’s urgent economic needs.

“Malawi needed discipline – it received consumption. Malawi needed a production revolution – it received tax hikes. Malawi needed liquidity control – it received expansion. Malawi needed a credible foreign exchange plan – it received administrative controls,” the statement reads in part.

UTM further noted that the budget does not adequately address structural issues and risks perpetuating fiscal mismanagement, worsening inflation, and further burdening citizens already struggling with high living costs.

The party also raised concerns about the overestimation of Gross Domestic Product projections, the inflation outlook that is not aligned with prevailing economic realities, and ongoing foreign exchange challenges that threaten to destabilize trade and business activities.

Additionally, UTM warned that fiscal deficits and domestic borrowing remain unchecked, and criticized the newly introduced tax measures as heavy, inflationary, and counterproductive, potentially undermining economic growth and development.

The statement concludes with a call for the government to implement policies that prioritize production, fiscal discipline, and sustainable economic reforms to alleviate poverty and restore public confidence in national economic management.

UTM’s critique underscores growing public concern over Malawi’s economic trajectory and highlights the pressure on the DPP to adopt bold measures to address the country’s persistent financial and structural challenges.

Malawi Govt recalls public relations officers with immediate effect

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi government has recalled all Public Relations Officers (PROs) with immediate effect, as confirmed by the Minister of Information, Shadreck Namalomba

The investigation has also revealed that, some of the PROs recalled including Grace Kapatuka, Principal Communications Officer for the Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 and Cholera; Mphatso Nkuonera from the Ministry of Lands; Pauline Kaude from the Ministry of Gender; Nellie Kapatuka from the Ministry of Labour; Tionge Kampondeni from the Ministry of Mining, Watson Maingo from the Ministry of Transport; and Gift Chiponde from Ministry of Education.

However, investigations by Maravi Post reveal that some PRO officers have not met their fate, including; Adrian Chikumbe and Loness Gwazanga both in the Ministry of Health, and Christopher Kapachika Banda from the Ministry of Education.

Chikumbe and Kapachika were not assigned by the Ministry of Information which is the policy holder, but were just handpicked by some political cadres, allegedly due to their loyalty to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Mphatso Nkuonera, former PRO in the Ministry of Lands, expressed his gratitude in a farewell message that he dropped on Monday, on a WhatsApp forum, stating, “It’s time to say goodbye… You were available 24/7, and I am very grateful, kindly support the incoming.”

When contacted, Minister of Information and Government Chief Spokesperson, Hon. Namalomba confirmed the recall, saying, “The government has indeed recalled all PROs.”

The recall comes amid concerns about the role of PROs in government and their potential influence on public opinion.

The development has sparked speculation about the government’s intentions and the future of the PROs.

The Malawi government has been under pressure to ensure transparency and accountability in its operations.

The recall of PROs may be seen as a step towards achieving this goal.

Further details are awaited on the implications of this move and the government’s plans for the PROs.

South African authorities probe Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla over alleged recruitment of men to Ukraine War

PRETORIA-(MaraviPost)-South African police have launched an investigation into serious allegations against Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, the daughter of former President Jacob Zuma.

She is accused of allegedly deceiving 17 men into joining Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Reports indicate that the men were recruited under the pretense of serving as bodyguards for her father’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party.

Her stepsister, Nkosazana Bongamini Zuma-Mncube, has claimed that the men were sent to Russia and subsequently deployed to the front lines of the conflict.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla has not publicly responded to the accusations at this time.

The 2021 riots in South Africa remain a separate legal matter for which she is already facing trial, reportedly for incitement of violence.

Earlier this month, the office of President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that it had received urgent requests for assistance from 17 South African men, aged between 20 and 39, who are trapped in the Donbas region of Ukraine.

The allegations have sparked national concern in South Africa over the recruitment of citizens for foreign conflicts under potentially false pretenses.

Police investigations are ongoing, and authorities are seeking to establish the full circumstances surrounding the men’s deployment and the role of Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla and her associates.

The situation has added to the scrutiny of Zuma-Sambudla’s activities and intensified discussions around accountability for the recruitment of citizens in international conflicts.
