The Economist Investigation exposes Amitofo Orphanage as wildlife crimes hub in Malawi

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-An explosive investigation by The Economist has uncovered a disturbing web of wildlife trafficking allegedly orchestrated through the Taiwanese Buddhist-managed Amitofo Care Centre (ACC) in Blantyre, Malawi — a facility established to care for orphans and vulnerable children.

Instead, evidence suggests that some of these orphans have been systematically groomed and exploited by a network of Chinese wildlife criminals posing as business investors.

The revelations point to deep-seated corruption, institutional negligence, and a dangerous exploitation of Malawi’s most vulnerable youth.

Inside Amitofo Orphanage centre

From Orphanage to Wildlife Mule: Francis’s Story

At the heart of The Economist investigation, titled “The School for Wildlife Traffickers”, lies the chilling account of a 19-year-old boy, identified as Francis, who says he was coerced by Amitofo’s Human Resources Manager, Branson Njunga, into participating in illegal ivory transactions.

Njunga — recently arrested in Chikwawa for possession of ivory and currently facing charges — allegedly acted as a conduit between Amitofo’s vulnerable youth and Chinese wildlife traffickers.

“He had heard about former students at Amitofo who had been recruited into the illegal wildlife trade,” writes journalist Rachel Nuwer. “He had also seen news stories about people caught with ivory serving years in prison.”

Fearing for his future, Francis abandoned his education and left the centre — a decision that may have saved his freedom.

Inside the Illicit Network: Njunga, Lin, and the Chinese Connection

Undercover investigators quoted in The Economist report reveal that Njunga openly admitted to working with Chinese associates in Lilongwe, sourcing ivory for them.

Njunga arrested in sky blue from from left

He even offered to supply 20 kilograms of ivory to an undercover journalist.

“It’s risky business, but where there is money, people take risks,” Njunga allegedly told the investigator.

His recent arrest alongside two others in possession of ivory only reinforces the allegations.

They are now facing charges for possessing specimens of protected species — an offence carrying severe custodial penalties under Malawi’s wildlife protection laws.

But Njunga’s role appears to be just one part of a much larger, well-coordinated network.

The Shadow of Yunhua Lin: Pardoned Kingpin Still Pulling Strings

The Economist investigation also revisits the case of Yunhua Lin, an international wildlife trafficker once convicted in Malawi.

Despite his 14-year sentence, Lin was controversially pardoned by President Lazarus Chakwera in July this year — while one of his Malawian “runners,” Aaron Dyson, remains behind bars serving a 15-year sentence for crimes he was reportedly coerced into committing.

Lin, who is now facing separate corruption charges, has been repeatedly denied bail by the courts, with judges citing him as a flight risk.

Yet, despite multiple failed applications, Lin has again filed for bail — raising questions about whether the judicial system is being manipulated to his advantage.

Human rights observers say Lin’s influence continues to extend deep into Malawi’s institutions.

Lin, Wildlife crime convict

“It is shocking how Chinese traffickers manipulate vulnerable Malawians — including orphans — into committing crimes on their behalf, only for the locals to rot in jail while the real masterminds use their illicit wealth to escape justice,” said a human rights and legal expert from Chancellor College, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The investigation reveals that Lin maintained ties with the Lilongwe branch of Amitofo Care Centre, even purchasing part of land near the facility to reportedly store illegal wildlife products.

Former Amitofo student Aaron Dyson, once celebrated as a “model orphan” and Mandarin prodigy, was recruited into Lin’s network after returning from language training in Taiwan.

Dyson’s story underscores the tragic transformation from hopeful student to victim of transnational crime.

He allegedly handled ivory and rhino horn runs across Namibia, Botswana, Tanzania, Kenya, and Zimbabwe — operations believed to have been financed and directed by Lin.

Equally concerning is the state’s response.

Despite repeated arrests and court findings, Lin continues to exploit legal loopholes and influence networks to maintain his freedom.

His July presidential pardon remains one of the most controversial acts of executive clemency in recent memory.

Call for Urgent Government Action.

“The revelations demand immediate scrutiny from Malawi’s Ministry of Gender, Ministry of Homeland Security, Department of National Parks and Wildlife, and the Anti-Corruption Bureau,” calls Lilongwe based environmental activist asked for annonymity.

He stressed on the need for authorities to protect and rehabilitate victims of the trafficking network; Investigate the conditions surrounding Lin’s presidential pardon; and Strengthen oversight over foreign religious and charitable institutions operating in Malawi.

“Anything less would be a betrayal of the very children and communities the state is meant to protect.” he earned.

“If these findings are left unchecked, Malawi risks becoming a regional hub for wildlife trafficking — fuelled by poverty, foreign manipulation, and institutional indifference.

“It is now up to the authorities to act — not with statements, but with prose,” said a Chancellor college  legal and human rights expert also opted for anonymity.

The Ministry of Gender and Ministry of Justice are yet to comment on the unfolding developments .

Arsenal thrashes Slavia Prague extend dominant form in Europe

…Arsenal 3-0 Slavia Prague

Arsenal continued their impressive run in both domestic and European competitions after thrashing Slavia Prague 3–0 in the UEFA Champions League group stage match played on Tuesday night .

The win further cements their reputation as one of the most in form teams in Europe this season.

The Gunners looked sharp and determined from the first whistle, with Bukayo Saka once again proving to be the difference maker. The England international opened the scoring in the 32nd minute from the penalty spot after Gabriel Martinelli was brought down inside the box. His calm finish sent the Slavia goalkeeper the wrong way, setting the tone for a dominant display.

After the break, Arsenal’s intensity rose even higher. Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino doubled the lead in the 46th minute with a precise left-footed strike from the edge of the box that flew past the helpless goalkeeper. The goal lifted the Emirates faithful who had traveled in numbers to support their team.

Merino struck again in the 68th minute, finishing off a well-worked team move involving Saka and Martin Ødegaard. The goal showcased Arsenal’s fluid attacking play and tactical discipline under manager Mikel Arteta, who has turned the North London club into a force to be reckoned with.

Arteta praised his players after the match, highlighting their teamwork and consistency. “We are showing the mentality of champions,” he said.

“Every player understands their role, and the connection with our supporters keeps driving us forward,”he added.

Arsenal now sits comfortably at the top of their group, ahead of European heavyweights like Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund. Their qualification to the knockout stage looks almost certain if they maintain their current form.

Supporters have been quick to celebrate the team’s success with some fans humorously suggesting they might need “tayi ti sekilite” (seat belts) to keep up with the team’s speed and thrilling performances.

Many fans believe this could be Arsenal’s best chance in years to challenge for the Champions League trophy.

Football pundits across Europe have also lauded the Gunners for their tactical maturity and attacking flair.

Former Arsenal legend Thierry Henry described the team as “balanced, hungry and fearless,” emphasizing how Arteta’s system has finally clicked.

“It’s supposed to happen real soon,” Diggs, 31, told Extra at the 2025 CFDA Fashion Awards on Monday, November 3, teasing when the couple’s little one is due.

The New England Patriots receiver will be new to parenthood, so he asked the reporter and fans to “wish us both luck” on the journey.

Diggs also revealed the sex of his and Cardi’s baby during the New York City event, telling People, “It’s a boy.”

NFL Star Stefon Diggs Reacts to Girlfriend Cardi B’s Pregnancy Reveal

When asked what he’s most excited about once the baby arrives, Diggs said having a son is “enough” for him.

“I can’t wait to make him do push-ups and sit-ups and run around,” the NFL player added.

Cardi, 33, previously hinted at wanting a baby boy with Diggs on the song “On My Back” from her album Am I the Drama, which dropped in September.

“I be staring in your eyes through the whole day / I swear to God, I hope our kids have your whole face,” the lyrics read. “Take these clothes off and throw ’em on the floor / I told my girl I’m ’bout to give this man a boy / Throw me on my back.”

Diggs was first linked to Cardi in October 2024 after the rapper filed for divorce from Offset that July. Cardi and Offset, 33, were married six years before their split and share three children: Kulture, 7, Wave, 4, and Blossom, 13 months.

While Cardi initially denied she was dating Diggs, the pair continued to fuel romance rumors. In June, the Grammy winner confirmed her relationship with Diggs via social media by sharing a cozy photo with him on a yacht.

Three months later, Cardi announced her pregnancy with baby No. 4, her first with Diggs. “I am having a baby with my boyfriend,” she told Gayle King during an appearance on CBS Mornings in September. “I’m excited.”

Who Is Stefon Diggs? 5 Things to Know About the NFL Player

Weeks before Cardi confirmed her pregnancy, Diggs responded to a lawsuit filed by Aileen Lopera in December 2024, who claimed that he is the father of her 7-month-old baby girl.

Us Weekly confirmed that Diggs said in a July 17 filing that he was certain he was not the father of Lopera’s daughter, Charliee, who was born on April 2. He requested “genetic testing to determine” whether he is the father and asked the court for joint legal and physical custody of the child if the test proves paternity.

Amid the drama, Diggs has been focused on football, and Cardi has been his No. 1 supporter.

The musician was spotted at the Patriots’ home game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, November 2. Cardi sat next to Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft at Gillette Stadium wearing a burgundy coat that barely covered her growing baby bump.

Andy Richter Reflects on His Weight in the Public Eye Amid ‘DWTS’ Success

Andy Richter is reflecting on his weight struggles in the public eye after revealing that he’s dropped a few pounds because of Dancing With the Stars.

Richter, 59, was in conversation with Colin Hanks during the Tuesday, November 4, episode of SiriusXM’s “The Three Questions with Andy Richter” podcast. Hanks, 47, was on the show to discuss directing Prime Video’s John Candy: I Like Me documentary when the topic of weight came up.

Hanks detailed how the late Candy’s weight was always discussed in interviews when Richter lamented on the early days of his own career.

“The first thing that comes to mind is one of my standard lines about what it was like to start in 1993 on Late Night With Conan O’Brien — that being the first thing I had ever done,” Richter said. “I had acted, but nothing that had ever gotten any attention or that was out even. I had already done the movie Cabin Boy, but it wasn’t out yet.”

Andy Richter Reveals His Biggest Fears and Insecurities About ‘DWTS’

He added, “One of my standard lines is, ‘I didn’t know there were so many ways to call someone fat.’ Because it was just cherubic, rotund, all these different [words].”

Richter said the way he was described was “galling” to him.

“They don’t say anything about my good, strong teeth. But they have to mention that,” he continued, noting that there’s a “comedy” aspect as well. Richter even admitted to joking about his own weight struggles.

“I would always say it’s skinny and fatty,” Richter recalled. “That’s a comedy trope. It was always kind of that thing.”

Richter has been candid about discussing his recent transformation since making his DWTS debut in September alongside professional dance partner Emma Slater.

The comedian said on the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast last month that he initially didn’t want to be on DWTS but decided to use the show as a way to “get moving” in his daily life.

“It got me to go to the gym and do cardio, which I loathe. I started to do a lot more stretching just to kind of prepare myself,” he said. “I was terrified that I was going to get injured or that I just wouldn’t be able to do it. And then would have to pull out and be embarrassed.”

Andy Richter Nearly Didn’t Do ‘DWTS’: ‘Turn It Down and Don’t Tell Anyone’

Slater, 36, mentioned that Richter has lost weight during last week’s prerecorded package ahead of their performance.

“I was thinking I won’t be able to cut it,” Richter said in one rehearsal package. “Now I have to admit all this physical activity has made me feel better about myself.”

He added, “I definitely felt like, ‘Well, I’m older now, I can’t do as much as I used to.’ And now, I’m like, ‘Yes you can, you lazy bum.’ I just feel like a better person now. I feel more alive.”

Richter’s continued success in the competition has received mixed reactions from viewers. Some DWTS fans want him to win, while others hope the comedian gets eliminated.

“It is an entertainment show, and it is for people that have not done this before, and so it’s beautiful to watch them get a moment in the spotlight and to grow and to see improvement,” Slater told Us Weekly exclusively last month. “He, every bit, deserves his place here.”
