Maravi Post Journalist Shaffie Mtambo’s digital storytelling shines as Muslim Awards spotlight media excellence

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Muslim Awards 2025 on Friday night in Blantyre turned the spotlight on the growing influence of digital media, with Maravi Post journalist Shaffie Mtambo emerging as Best Media Personality Online.

The award underscores the power of responsible online journalism in shaping public discourse.

Held in a colourful atmosphere that drew together religious leaders, politicians, media practitioners and community members from across Malawi, the ceremony celebrated Muslims who are making notable contributions in various fields, ranging from arts and education to sports and media.

In his remarks after receiving the accolade, Mtambo said the honour was less about personal glory and more about recognition of collective effort within the media industry.

He dedicated the award to his colleagues at Maravi Post and to the communities whose stories continue to shape his journalism.

Mtambo noted that the award has motivated him to work even harder, explaining that the support he received during the voting process reflected public trust in the publication’s commitment to quality storytelling.

He thanked readers and supporters for believing in his work and the Maravi Post platform.

The Muslim Awards, established in 2022, have become an annual platform for celebrating excellence among Muslims in Malawi.

Over the years, the event has expanded to include categories such as poetry, nasheeds, drama, education, media and community development, reflecting the diversity of talent within the Muslim community.

In other categories, Ishmael Dinala claimed the Best Poem award, while Prince Mtelera received a Special Recognition Award for his contribution to the community.

Lilongwe Islamic Secondary School was named Best Islamic Education Institution, and Gift of the Givers won Best Islamic Organisation.

Sports excellence was also recognised, with Muhammad Sulumba taking home the Best Sports Personality award. In the digital creative space, Ibrahim Mtengula was crowned Best Content Creator.

Traditional media categories equally featured prominently, as Tagamchira Meeklem Chiperesa won Best Media Personality, TV, Alick Abdul Majid claimed the radio category, and Aubrey Thom Vakhani emerged winner in the print media section.

Minister of Local Government, Ben Phiri, said he was impressed by the level of talent showcased among nominees and winners.

He described the awards as important networking platforms that bring together creatives from different parts of the country.

Phiri further noted that President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika supports initiatives that recognise and reward creativity, stressing that meaningful development requires proper planning and appreciation of talent.

He called for stronger collaboration between government and society to help Malawian creatives reach higher standards.

Witchcraft Accusations and Enforced Disappearance of Ms Inyang in Cross River

By Leo Igwe

The Advocacy for Alleged Witches is disturbed by the report of the enforced disappearance of Ms Arit Inyang following accusations of witchcraft in Calabar, Cross River state. A local advocate confirmed this tragic news in a message sent to AfAW: “Mama Arit is always visiting my house right from when she came in contact with me after the nephew, Mr Anthony Malachy, branded her a witch. Mama would always come and tell me whenever Anthony came accusing or threatening her. On October 27, I checked Mama Arit, and she was not in her house. I thought she went out. I decided to go home. Later, a close relative reported that Mama Arit had not yet been seen for days. I was very sick. I asked the relative to go to the police and report. But she didn’t. The relative visited my house three times, telling me that Mama had not been seen. She told me Mama’s nephew, Anthony, was asking Ms Inyang if she didn’t want to die. I told her to inform the police”.
According to local sources, Ms Arit is about 86 years old and a widow. The husband, a retired military officer, passed away some years ago. And she has no children. An advocate who is familiar with the case told AfAW: “Mr Anthony Malachy, aged 40, residing at Isong Inyang Akamkpa Adjacent Christian Academy near the celestial church, accused Mama of witchcraft. Anthony’s mother passed away, and he accused Ms Arit of killing his mother through witchcraft. Mr Anthony came on several occasions with a machete and threatened to kill Mama, stating that if anyone in the family died again, since two persons had died, he would kill her.

Mama Arit said that Anthony entered her house and collected the clothes that were given to her at an empowerment program for victims of witch hunts in Calabar. He also carried all her cooking utensils: pots, spoons, etc. Anthony took away boxes of clothes from her house before this very incident occurred. Mama said Anthony did all this to her because she was childless and a widow. Mama was begging for justice before they killed her”.

A local advocate stated that the following incident must have led to her sudden disappearance: “On January 23, 2024, Mr Anthony said birds were making noise late in the night. He accused Mama Arit of turning into a bird and engaging in some witchcraft. By 1:00 am, he got up and started throwing stones at Mama’s house. In response, Mama sneaked out of her house at about 3 am that night. She went and slept in a nearby bush, at Plantain Farm, until she saw someone preaching in the area. She came out of her hiding and started moving down to my house, half-naked. I refuse to give her some clothes. I decided to take her like that to the police station because that is the 3rd time with her in the police station”.

Local advocates petitioned the police, and Anthony was arrested. He signed an undertaking not to accuse, harass, or threaten Ms Inyang again, and he was subsequently released. Some days after his release, Ms Inyang went missing and has not been seen to date. Advocates suspect that Anthony abducted, disappeared, and must have murdered Ms Inyang and disposed of the corpse.

The Advocacy for Alleged Witches urges the Inspector General of Police to investigate the enforced disappearance of Ms Inyang. The police should arrest and investigate Mr Anthony Malachy and others suspected of being involved in this tragic incident.

Malawi FA fines FCB Nyasa Big Bullets MK5 million over FDH semis misconduct

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Competitions Committee has ordered FCB Nyasa Big Bullets to pay a fine of five million kwacha for misconduct following incidents that occurred during the team’s 2025 FDH Bank Cup semifinal match against Mighty Wanderers on 2nd November, 2025 at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

In a decision communicated after the Committee held its meeting on 5 December 2025, FAM has also handed a 12-month ban to Bullets’ security personnel, Thomson Chauluka, from all football-related activities.

The charges were formally issued on 20 November 2025, giving both the club and the individual 48 hours to respond.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets submitted a written response, which the Committee accepted as their right to be heard in line with Article 25.8 of the FDH Bank Cup Rules and Regulations.

Chauluka did not submit any response.

Following its review, the Committee ruled that FCB Nyasa Big Bullets supporters engaged in violence and hooliganism in the 50th minute of the match by pelting stones and bottles onto the field of play and in the direction of the second assistant referee, forcing the match to be halted for three minutes. The Club was fined MK1 million for the offence.

The club was further found guilty of failing to take adequate precautions to prevent its security personnel from abandoning duty.

In the 95th minute, steward Thomson Chauluka entered the field of play and poured a liquid substance on Mighty Wanderers FC goalkeeper.

For this misconduct, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets were fined MK2 million.

Additionally, the Committee ruled that the club’s failure to control its supporters and security official brought the game of football, FAM, and the competition sponsor into disrepute. As a result, the club was fined a further K2 million.

The total fine imposed on FCB Nyasa Big Bullets amounts to K5 million, which must be settled before the club’s next official match.

Mr Chauluka was found guilty of assaulting an opponent and has been banned from all football-related activities, including attending FAM-sanctioned matches, for a period of 12 months with immediate effect.

FAM has also directed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets to ensure full compliance with the individual ban imposed on Chauluka, warning that failure to do so may result in further sanctions against the club, including fines or points deduction.

Both FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mr Chauluka have been informed of their right to appeal the decision to the FAM Disciplinary Committee within 72 hours of receipt of the ruling, subject to meeting the conditions outlined in Articles 25.12 and 25.13 of the 2025 FDH Bank Cup Rules and Regulations.
