BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawian football fraternity is mourning the passing of former Flames striker Esau “Black Mamba” Kanyenda, who has died in the United Kingdom after being diagnosed with liver cancer.
Kanyenda, 43 years old, revealed his battle with the illness on his Facebook page on Monday, December 1st, 2025, where he appealed to the public for prayers as he fought for his life. Sadly, he succumbed to the disease shortly afterwards.
Esau Kanyenda had been living in the UK since retiring from professional football in 2018, ending his illustrious career with Mighty Wanderers. Widely respected for his pace, strength and discipline, Kanyenda remains one of Malawi’s most iconic exports.
His football journey began in 1998 with Dwasco FC, from where he rose to become a fully fledged international star.
He later moved to South Africa, where he played for Jomo Cosmos and Polokwane City.
His impressive performances earned him a move to Europe, spending several seasons in Russia with Lokomotiv Moscow, Rotor Volgograd, FC Kamaz and Dynamo Bryansk.
In 2012, he also had a brief stint in Denmark, continuing to showcase his versatility and experience on the pitch.
Among those paying tribute is former Flames defender and close friend Elvis Kafoteka, who shared emotional reflections on their bond.
“Esau was very humble. He was my roommate every time we went to camp for the national team. We would always encourage one another,” Kafoteka said.
“He was someone who was serious whenever he was in the country for national duty,”Kafoteka explained in an interview with MaraviPost publication.
Kafoteka further revealed a personal gesture inspired by their friendship.
“It’s also the reason I picked jersey 12, because he was putting on jersey 11,” he added.
Kanyenda’s death leaves a huge void in Malawi football, where he is remembered not only for his achievements but also for his humility, leadership and commitment to the game.
His legacy as one of the finest strikers to wear the Flames jersey will live on.

YAOUNDE-(MaraviPost)-Cameroon’s preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations has taken a significant turn following the release of the national team’s official squad.
The announcement features the inclusion of Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo, while experienced goalkeeper André Onana, currently playing in Saudi Arabia, has been omitted entirely.
Mbeumo’s selection comes as no surprise to analysts who have followed his impressive form since joining Manchester United.
His pace, technical ability and increasing influence at club level have made him a key figure and the national team’s technical panel views him as an essential asset in Cameroon’s attacking setup for the continental tournament.
The forward is expected to bring dynamism to the frontline with his versatility allowing him to operate comfortably both centrally and on the wings.
His presence adds creativity and a goal threat that Cameroon will rely on as they aim for a strong showing at AFCON.
On the other hand, the exclusion of Onana has raised considerable debate.
Despite being widely regarded as one of Africa’s top goalkeepers, he has been dropped from the squad, a decision that has caught many by surprise.
Onana, currently playing in Saudi Arabia, has long been a central figure for the Indomitable Lions, featuring prominently in past international campaigns.
Cameroon’s technical team has not publicly explained the reasons behind Onana’s omission, leading to speculation among supporters and analysts.
Some suggest it may be linked to recent availability concerns or the desire to introduce fresh options in the goalkeeping department ahead of the tournament.
The decision places added responsibility on the goalkeepers selected to replace Onana, who will be expected to perform at the highest level under immense pressure.
It also signals the coaching staff’s intent to adopt a new direction, whether tactically or in terms of team culture.
Reactions from fans have been mixed.
A portion of supporters applauded the inclusion of in-form players like Mbeumo, while others expressed concern over the absence of a goalkeeper with Onana’s experience and international pedigree.

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Mzuzu University (MZUNI) emerged as the overall winner of the Tertiary Students Sports Association of Malawi (TESSAM) Weekend Sports Festival, held on Saturday and Sunday at the University of Malawi in Zomba in a competition designed to scout athletes for the 2026 CUCSA Games in Botswana.
MZUNI outperformed its rivals with victories in men’s and women’s football, netball and volleyball, securing its position as the top institution of the tournament.
Bunda College claimed both men’s and women’s basketball, the University of Malawi triumphed in chess, while Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) led in athletics.
The festival, sponsored by National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Plc through a K17 million investment, brought together universities and colleges for a high-stakes talent identification platform aimed at assembling the next national university team, TESSAM Malawi.
Zomba NBM Plc Service Centre Manager, Tawina Malata, expressed pride in the Bank’s role in supporting Malawi’s sporting youth.
“We strongly believe that the future of our country rests in the hands of the youth, and supporting this festival allows us to nurture their talents and potential. We are pleased that several outstanding players have been identified to represent Malawi. As National Bank, we are honoured to stand with institutions in promoting discipline, ambition, and national development through sports,” said Malata.
TESSAM Malawi Vice President, Geoffrey Biya, said the tournament fulfilled its primary mission of scouting athletes for the CUCSA Games and praised NBM Plc for bridging the resource gap universities often face.
“These games were specifically organized to identify players who will represent Malawi next year. National Bank’s support made it possible for all these universities to come together and compete at this scale. We are grateful for their commitment to youth development and sports excellence,” said Biya.
MZUNI Sports Director, Thomas Movetie, whose institution delivered the strongest overall performance, described the victory as a proud moment for the university.
“We are extremely proud of what our athletes have achieved. Their hard work has paid off, and it shows the strength and determination of the MZUNI community. We also appreciate National Bank Plc for stepping in to support university sports and helping create opportunities for young athletes across the country,” said Movetie.
The festival successfully met its objective, with 30 netball players, 12 chess players, 24 volleyball players, 24 men’s basketball players, 34 women’s basketball players, 28 women’s football players, and 34 athletics competitors scouted for provisional inclusion in the national university squad.

HARARE-(MaraviPost)-Highlanders FC of Zimbabwe has announced that it will not renew the contract of its head coach, Pieter De Jongh, marking the end of his tenure with the Bulawayo giants.
The development was confirmed through an official letter released by the club, indicating that both parties had mutually agreed not to extend the Dutchman’s contract, which expires on 31 December 2025.
De Jongh, who previously coached Malawi’s Silver Strikers, took charge of Highlanders with the hope of reviving the team’s competitive edge in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League. However, the 2025 season proved challenging for the club.
Highlanders finished the league campaign 11th, collecting 39 points from 34 matches, a performance that fell short of the club’s expectations and ambitions. Despite some spirited displays, the team struggled for consistency throughout the season.
In the statement, the club expressed gratitude to De Jongh for his service, professionalism, and commitment during his time at the helm. They acknowledged the effort he invested in trying to restore Highlanders’ glory but said it was time for the institution to pursue a new direction.
Sources within the club indicate that Highlanders will soon begin the search for a new head coach who can guide the team towards improved performances next season. Supporters are hoping for a tactician capable of building a stronger squad and competing for honours.
De Jongh leaves behind a mixed legacy praised for his tactical discipline and criticised in equal measure for the team’s inconsistent results. His departure marks yet another chapter in Highlanders’ ongoing efforts to rebuild.
Highlanders is expected to make further announcements in the coming days regarding interim technical arrangements and the recruitment process for a new coach.
For now, the club has urged supporters to remain patient and hopeful as the institution charts its next steps in preparation for the 2026 season.
