Malawi receives solar-powered cold chain boost to strengthen vaccine deliver

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi on Tuesday received a multimillion-kwacha consignment of solar-powered cold chain equipment, a development expected to significantly reinforce the country’s vaccine delivery and overall public-health systems.

The equipment valued at US$776,000 was provided through a partnership involving Africa CDC, UNICEF and the Mastercard Foundation.

Officials say the new units will help maintain vaccine potency and expand access in communities that continue to face unreliable electricity.

Speaking to journalists,Africa CDC Regional Director Lul Riek described the handover as a milestone for Malawi, emphasizing that the advanced storage technology will ensure life-saving vaccines reach even the most remote parts of the country.

On his part, Secretary for Health Dan Namarika said the new capacity will address long-standing challenges linked to power outages and limited refrigeration, allowing Malawi to reach tens of thousands of children who previously missed routine immunisation.

Government and development partners have since hailed the donation as a major step toward building a stronger and more resilient national immunisation system capable of protecting Malawians of all ages.

Actor Tumpe ‘Phwedo’ Mtaya withdraws from awards as court case resumes

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-One of the country’s renowned film actors Tumpe Mtaya, popularly known as Phwedo, has withdrawn his nomination from all award competitions in which the public is voting for outstanding performers this year, saying he wants to focus on resolving his ongoing court cases which have been rescheduled to resume this Thursday.

Mtaya is answering two charges of having sexual intercourse with a minor and child trafficking.

In an interview with Maravi Post, the actor expressed gratitude for the court’s decision and emphasized his determination to clear his name.

He said the decision to step back from all awards this year was difficult but necessary to ensure he gives the case the attention it deserves.

Despite his withdrawal, Mtaya voiced strong support for his colleagues from the film ‘Welcome to Maula Prison.’

He praised actresses Sophie Mponda and Desiree Namachosa, who are nominated for Best Actress, commending their talent and wishing them success.

He also extended solidarity to fellow actors Jaliwa, Nikalagwa, and NBurundi, who are nominated for Best Actor.

Mtaya said he is proud of their work together and remains confident that one of them will bring home the award.

The actor concluded his message by thanking fans for their continued support and understanding during this challenging period.

Second Vice President Enock Kanzingeni Chihana has joined President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and First Lady Madame Gertrude Mutharika in recognizing the significance of this campaign.

He emphasized that this year’s campaign theme highlights one of the fastest-growing forms of abuse: digital violence against women and girls.
