JFK’s Niece Vows to Use ‘Pickax’ to Remove Trump’s Name From Kennedy Center

The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. is one step closer to being called the Trump-Kennedy Center.

On December 18, 2025, the White House confirmed the board of the Kennedy Center voted to rename the building that is in honor of President John F. Kennedy.

“I have just been informed that the highly respected Board of the Kennedy Center, some of the most successful people from all parts of the world, have just voted unanimously to rename the Kennedy Center to the Trump-Kennedy Center, because of the unbelievable work President Trump has done over the last year in saving the building,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote via X at the time. “Not only from the standpoint of its reconstruction, but also financially, and its reputation. Congratulations to President Donald J. Trump, and likewise, congratulations to President Kennedy, because this will be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt attain new levels of success and grandeur.”

Soon after the news broke, several Kennedy family members spoke out against the board’s decision.

Celebrities Call Out President Trump’s Comments About Rob Reiner’s Death

Maria Shriver questioned why Trump has been so interested in having his name be part of the cultural center.

“Next thing perhaps he will want to rename JFK Airport, rename the Lincoln Memorial, the Trump Lincoln Memorial. The Trump Jefferson Memorial. The Trump Smithsonian. The list goes on,” she wrote via Instagram. “Can we not see what is happening here? C’mon, my fellow Americans! Wake up! This is not dignified. This is not funny. This is way beneath the stature of the job. It’s downright weird. It’s obsessive in a weird way. Just when you think someone can’t stoop any lower, down they go…”

According to NBC News, Trump told reporters at the White House that he was “surprised” and “honored” by the board’s vote.

Keep reading to see how other Kennedy family members reacted to the news:

JFK’s only grandson vowed to fight back against the Kennedy Center’s new name.

“SEND ME TO CONGRESS TO SMOKE THESE FOOLS — MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD LOUD AND CLEAR,” Schlossberg, who is running for New York’s 12th Congressional District, said via Instagram on December 18, 2025. “I won’t back down or be drowned out.”

Joe Kennedy III

After seeing Leavitt’s announcement about the Kennedy Center, JFK’s nephew decided to speak out on social media.

“The Kennedy Center is a living memorial to a fallen president and named for President Kennedy by federal law,” he wrote via X on December 18, 2025. “It can no sooner be renamed than can someone rename the Lincoln Memorial, no matter what anyone says.”

Maria Shriver

The journalist and niece of JFK expressed her disappointment at the Kennedy Center being renamed to the Trump-Kennedy Center.

“The Kennedy Center was named after my uncle, President John F Kennedy. It was named in his honor. He was a man who was interested in the arts, interested in culture, interested in education, language, history,” she wrote via Instagram on December 18, 2025. “He brought the arts into the White House, and he and my Aunt Jackie [Kennedy Onassis] amplified the arts, celebrated the arts, stood up for the arts and artists.”

Shriver continued, “It is beyond comprehension that this sitting president has sought to rename this great memorial dedicated to President Kennedy. It is beyond wild that he would think adding his name in front of President Kennedy’s name is acceptable. It is not.”

After workers installed Trump’s name to the Kennedy Center building, Shriver spoke out again.

“This will always be the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts,” she wrote via Instagram later that month. “A great man would have said to his hand picked board, ‘Thank you, but the building already has its name. Let it stand. Let it be. I don’t need that.’ But then again…”

Kerry Kennedy

“President Trump and his administration have spent the past year repressing free expression, targeting artists, journalists, and comedians and erasing the history of Americans whose contributions made our nation better and more just,” JFK’s niece Kerry wrote via X on December 18, 2025. “President Kennedy proudly stood for justice, peace, equality, dignity, diversity, and compassion for those who suffer. President Trump stands in opposition to these values, and his name should not be placed alongside President Kennedy’s.”

One day later, Kerry reacted to Trump’s name being installed on the building.

“Three years and one month from today, I’m going to grab a pickax and pull those letters off that building, but I’m going to need help holding the ladder,” she wrote via X. “Are you in? Applying for my carpenter’s card today, so it’ll be a union job!!!”

Donald Trump Attacks Jimmy Kimmel Again While Hosting Kennedy Center Honors

Tim Shriver

“Perhaps the board isn’t aware that the Kennedy Center is 𝗧𝗛𝗘 memorial to the president of the United States, John F. Kennedy.  Would they rename the Lincoln memorial? The Jefferson? That would be an insult to great presidents. This too is an insult to a great president,” JFK’s nephew Tim wrote via X in December 2025. “ Notwithstanding their short-sighted action, it is and will remain the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.”

Late Selena Quintanilla’s Father, Abraham Quintanilla, Dead at 86

Abraham Quintanilla, the father of late singer Selena Quintanilla, has died. He was 86.

“It’s with a heavy heart to let you guys know that my Dad passed away today…,” the late singer’s brother, Abraham “A.B.” Isaac Quintanilla, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, December 13, announcing his father’s death. Abraham’s son also shared a photo of his father, wearing rose-colored sunglasses.

The cause of death has not been made public.

Selena’s father married her mother, Marcella Quintanilla, in June 1963. In addition to their famous daughter and A.B., the pair also welcomed daughter Suzette.

Abraham took on the role of Selena’s manager as her music career took off. Her musical rise was truly a family enterprise, as A.B. played the bass and Suzette played the drums in her band.

In 2021, Abraham shared excerpts from his memoir A Father’s Dream: My Family’s Journey in Music with 3News. He also told the news station of the book, “It has a lot of things in there the public wants to know. Because there’s always been, and now it’s grown even more curiosity about Selena.”

He added, “You have to understand that people have sometimes the wrong image of musicians. But they forget one thing: that being involved in music is also a business, and for me it was a business, it became a business.”

While speaking about the beginning of Selena’s career, Abraham reflected on what the experience was like for the entire family. “At first it was a dream and then within time it became a reality because Selena became one of the leading female artists in the world,” he said

Selena was shot dead in Corpus Christi, Texas, at the age of 23 by her former friend and business associate Yolanda Saldívar, who was also accused of embezzling money from the singer’s business in the months that preceded the shooting.

Coroners ruled the death a homicide despite Saldívar’s claim it was accidental.

Us Weekly obtained the original 1995 report that confirmed that Selena died from a bullet wound to her lower right shoulder. The coroner further confirmed Selena died from “exsanguinating internal and external [bleeding] due to [a] perforating gunshot wound.”

“It is my opinion that Selena Quintanilla Pérez, a 23-year-old woman, came to her death as a result of an exsanguinating internal and external hemorrhage, in other words massive bleeding, due to a perforating gunshot wound of the thorax (chest),” coroner Lloyd White wrote.

Saldívar was charged with first-degree murder and was convicted in October 1995. Despite making a parole request in December 2024, as of November 2025, Saldívar has not been released from custody. Saldívar has served her sentence at a women’s prison in Gatesville, Texas.

“It was the parole panel’s determination to deny parole to Yolanda Saldívar and set her next parole review for March 2030,” the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles confirmed via a statement obtained by Us.

“While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand for the beautiful life that was taken from us and from millions of fans around the world far too soon,” the Quintanillas said via Instagram at the time. “Selena’s legacy is one of love, music, and inspiration. She lived with joy, gave selflessly, and continues to uplift generations with her voice and her spirit.”

Gov Diri: Children Abused for Witchcraft Need Justice and Care

By Leo Igwe

The Advocacy for Alleged Witches is disappointed by the way the police and government in Bayelsa are handling the case of children abused for witchcraft in the state. About a week ago, the police arrested an inspector, Sunday Idey, for accusing and subsequently abusing his children for belonging to a witch coven. People circulated images of the children with serious injuries on social media. The Advocacy for Alleged Witches contacted advocates in the state, and they confirmed the story. They noted that the children were in a hospital receiving treatment. Given the severity of the abuses, AfAW, with Do Foundation, and International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) applied to the Ministry for Women’s Affairs for temporary custody so that the children could be medically checked and rehabilitated before handing them over to the family.
AfAW urges the commissioner of police to ensure proper investigation and prosecution of the suspect.

Meanwhile, from the information reaching the Advocacy for Alleged Witches, the police have compromised on this matter. Regarding the investigation, the police had asked the suspect to go for a psychiatric test. Sources in Yenegoa are saying the police had asked him to go for the test outside the state. AfAW had been informed that this was a way the police planned to get him to escape and evade prosecution. A legal expert in Yenegoa who heard about this development stated, “I have always suspected this. Why would it be the police who would evaluate the mental state of the perpetrator? If he wants to rely on insanity, we know that it is a defense, so it should be the defendant pleading it and proving the same, while the prosecution, whose duty is to prove guilt, counters the plea with superior evidence”. Apparently, the police are trying to exonerate the suspect without charging him in court. This is sad.

The Advocacy for Alleged Witches has messaged the Commissioner of Police(CP)notifying him about this concern: “Dear CP, I am writing concerning the case of a police inspector who has been arrested for abusing the children for witchcraft. We are worried about how the case is going and how it would reflect on your office and the credibility of the Nigerian Police. First, we have been informed that he has been recommended for a psychiatrist test, and the plan is for him to travel outside Bayelsa for this test. Meanwhile, we have been informed that there are competent doctors who can conduct this test in Bayelsa. That the idea to get him to go conduct the test outside is a pretext to help him evade justice”. The CP did not respond to these messages. But the police public relations officer reassured AfAW that justice would be done.

In a related development, the Ministry of Women Affairs approved the application of the Advocacy for Alleged Witches, FIDA and Do Foundation to temporarily accommodate the children under their supervision pending the conclusion of the investigation. The emergency shelter has been rented, and caregivers have been contacted. Unfortunately, the police have refused to release the children to the Advocacy for Alleged Witches, Do Foundation, and Ministry for Women’s Affairs. The investigating police officer and his team are working with the relatives of the suspect to take the children away. The children still have bruises all over their bodies; one of them is walking with crutches. Their faces are swollen as a result of the beating. The children look traumatized.
The Advocacy for Alleged Witches urges the governor of Bayelsa, Duoye Diri, to intervene and ensure justice and protection for these children. As the governor, Diri should uphold the responsibility to protect these children. The wife of the governor, Dr. (Mrs) Gloria Diri, can also help. She should utilize the office of the First Lady of the state to support these children from now on.
The world is watching and following the way this case is being handled and will hold state authorities in Bayelsa to account.

Leo Igwe, director of the Advocacy for Alleged Witches, Columbia, Maryland, in the United States.
