Actor Tumpe ‘Phwedo’ Mtaya withdraws from awards as court case resumes

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-One of the country’s renowned film actors Tumpe Mtaya, popularly known as Phwedo, has withdrawn his nomination from all award competitions in which the public is voting for outstanding performers this year, saying he wants to focus on resolving his ongoing court cases which have been rescheduled to resume this Thursday.

Mtaya is answering two charges of having sexual intercourse with a minor and child trafficking.

In an interview with Maravi Post, the actor expressed gratitude for the court’s decision and emphasized his determination to clear his name.

He said the decision to step back from all awards this year was difficult but necessary to ensure he gives the case the attention it deserves.

Despite his withdrawal, Mtaya voiced strong support for his colleagues from the film ‘Welcome to Maula Prison.’

He praised actresses Sophie Mponda and Desiree Namachosa, who are nominated for Best Actress, commending their talent and wishing them success.

He also extended solidarity to fellow actors Jaliwa, Nikalagwa, and NBurundi, who are nominated for Best Actor.

Mtaya said he is proud of their work together and remains confident that one of them will bring home the award.

The actor concluded his message by thanking fans for their continued support and understanding during this challenging period.

Malawi’s Second Veep Chihana urges action against gender-based violence during 16 days of activism

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Malawi is currently observing the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a period dedicated to raising awareness and promoting action to end violence against women and girls.

Second Vice President Enock Kanzingeni Chihana has joined President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and First Lady Madame Gertrude Mutharika in recognizing the significance of this campaign.

In a public statement, Chihana described violence against women and girls as a global human rights emergency that demands immediate attention.

He emphasized that this year’s campaign theme highlights one of the fastest-growing forms of abuse: digital violence against women and girls.

The Second Vice President urged the nation to prioritize digital safety as a key component of gender equality and the advancement of human rights.

Chihana called for collective action to create a safe and equitable society where everyone can thrive regardless of gender.

He encouraged the public to report cases of gender-based violence and to provide support for survivors.

“Together, we can make a difference,” he concluded, emphasizing that ending gender-based violence requires participation from all sectors of society.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign in Malawi is part of a global initiative aimed at ending gender-based violence and promoting the rights and safety of women and girls.

Chihana’s remarks serve as a reminder that both online and offline spaces must be made safe to ensure the full protection of women and girls’ human rights.

Trump launches sharp attacks on democratic rivals during White House Thanksgiving Turkey Pardon

Trump to speak with Putin, then Zelenskyy, to push for Ukraine ceasefire

WASHINGTON DC-(MaraviPost)-During the traditional Thanksgiving turkey pardon ceremony at the White House on Tuesday, former President Donald Trump targeted his political opponents.

Trump’s remarks took aim at several prominent Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, President Joe Biden, and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.

The former president used the occasion to criticize their policies and leadership in a series of pointed comments.

Observers noted that Trump’s attacks were unusually direct and combative for a ceremonial event that is typically light-hearted and symbolic.

The turkey pardon, a longstanding White House tradition, involves sparing one or more turkeys from being slaughtered for Thanksgiving.

Despite the festive setting, Trump’s speech turned political, highlighting the ongoing tension between him and the Democratic Party.

Political analysts suggest that such remarks are likely intended to energize his base ahead of upcoming election cycles.

Democratic leaders have not yet formally responded to the former president’s comments from the ceremony.

The event drew media attention both for the traditional turkey pardon and for the unusually aggressive political rhetoric.

Trump’s appearance underscores his continued prominence in American political discourse and his readiness to publicly challenge Democratic figures.

The White House ceremony, typically a light-hearted celebration, was overshadowed by partisan attacks and pointed commentary.

As the holiday season continues, political observers anticipate that Trump’s rhetoric may influence public debate and media coverage in the weeks to come.
