NBM plc donates MK15 million sanitation equipment to Blantyre City Council

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has donated sanitation and maintenance equipment valued at K15 million to Blantyre City Council, as part of its K200 million Corporate Social Responsibility programme targeting district and city councils across the country.

Speaking during the official handover of the equipment on Friday, NBM plc Head of Corporate Banking, William Chatsala said the donation is aimed at supporting the council’s efforts to keep the city clean, in line with the bank’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) focus on health and sanitation.

“A clean and well-managed city is a shared responsibility between local authorities, the private sector, and citizens. We are confident that this equipment will enhance the Council’s operational capacity in maintaining cleanliness in the city,” said Chatsala.

Chatsala added that the bank remains committed to supporting development initiatives and is open to collaborating with local authorities to address challenges affecting communities.

“We remain open to further collaboration aligned to development priorities, whether in infrastructure, environmental management, or community-centred initiatives,” said Chatsala.

Blantyre City Mayor, Councillor Isaac Jomo Osman, acknowledged the timely support from NBM plc, noting that the donation comes as the council is preparing to launch the ‘Keep Blantyre Clean’ campaign.

“We sincerely thank the bank for this support. We are making deliberate efforts to keep the city clean, and several initiatives are already underway to improve the service delivery,” said Osman.

He urged residents to make proper use of the donated equipment, citing rising cases of cholera in the city.

“Through this donation, NBM plc is also helping to protect residents from the spread of cholera. As the city’s population continues to grow, it is the responsibility of every resident to play a role in keeping Blantyre clean,” said Osman.

The donated items include gumboots, heavy-duty PVC gloves, blooms, and other sanitation equipment.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-National Bank of Malawi (NBM) has handed over a completed floor upgrade work worth K12 million at Nankhwali Health Centre in Mangochi, boosting healthcare service delivery in the area.

Established in 1956, the facility serves a catchment population of more than 11,000 people.

Over time, the health centre faced a number of infrastructural challenges, including a damaged floor that affected daily operations and service provision.

Speaking during the handover ceremony on Tuesday in Mangochi, NBM plc Chief Executive Officer, Harold Jiya, said the upgrade was implemented under the bank’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme, aimed at supporting institutions that deliver essential services to Malawians.

“As the ‘Bank of the Nation’, NBM plc, takes pride in serving the people of Malawi. This year, we committed K1 billion towards our CSI initiatives. When Nankhwali Health Centre approached us, we found it necessary to support the facility due to the large population it serves,” said Jiya.

He further commended the health centre’s administration for its dedication to improving the well-being of surrounding communities, adding that partnerships remain key to sustainable development.

In his remarks, the Right Reverend Montfort Sitima, Bishop of the Mangochi Diocese, welcomed the intervention, describing it as a timely intervention that will enhance healthcare delivery.

“As a health facility, we face numerous challenges in meeting the growing demand for services. We are often overwhelmed, but this support from the National Bank of Malawi will help us improve the quality of care we provide to our people,” said Bishop Sitima.

Speaking on behalf of patients, guardian Fatima Elison said the challenges they previously faced at the facility would now be a thing of the past.

“We experienced several challenges, including damaged floors that disrupted services. With this support, the hospital is now operating efficiently, and more women are confident to seek care here. We are grateful,” said Elison

During the handover ceremony, NBM plc also donated assorted items to mothers in the maternity ward as part of its Christmas season goodwill gesture.

NBM plc concludes ‘12 Days of Christmas’ with MK33 million donation to Chilomoni Health Centre

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Plc has concluded its 2025 ‘12 Days of Christmas’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative with a MK33 million donation of medical equipment to Chilomoni Health Centre in Blantyre.

The donation forms part of the Bank’s broader K255 million CSR package, implemented between December 5 and 22, aimed at supporting health, education, and community wellbeing across all districts in the country.

For Chilomoni Health Centre, the Bank procured critical medical equipment, including patient monitors, an ECG machine, a biochemistry analyser, oxygen concentrators, an electric suction machine, a nebuliser, a defibrillator, and 12 wheelchairs, intended to strengthen service delivery at the facility.

Speaking during the handover ceremony on Monday, NBM plc Head of Retail Banking Division, Oswin Kasunda, said the donation marked the culmination of the Bank’s Christmas initiative introduced to systematically channel support to communities across the country during the festive season.

“As NBM plc, we are excited because this is this year’s grand finale of the 12 Days of Christmas campaign. It is a programme that started in 2021, where, as a Bank, we decided that every year we set aside a certain amount of money to support communities across the country in various sectors such as health, education and social wellbeing. We may not reach every household, but we have managed to reach every district, which makes the impact significant,” said Kasunda.

Receiving the donation, Chilomoni Health Centre Officer-in-Charge, Dr Steven Mlangiza, said the support would help address critical service gaps as the facility transitions into a community hospital.

“We are very happy and grateful for this support from National Bank. Chilomoni Health Centre is undergoing an upgrade to become a community hospital, which will enable it to admit patients and conduct more diagnostic tests. This donation will help us move significantly in that direction,” said Mlangiza.

He said the equipment would also support government efforts to fully operationalise the facility as a community hospital serving a catchment population of over 65,000 people.

Meanwhile, Vice Chairperson of the Chilomoni Health Centre Management Committee, Maliko Paul Chikaonga thanked NBM Plc for the donation, assuring the ‘Bank of the Nation’ that the equipment would be properly utilised and safeguarded.

“As the health centre management committee and community members, we are grateful to National Bank for this donation. We promise that the equipment will be put to good use and well taken care of,” said Chikaonga.

Other beneficiaries of the ‘12 days of Christmas’ initiative for this year included health centres such as St Martin’s in Mwanza, Area 25 and Chilomoni, schools in Chazunda, Mpemba, Kasungu, Liwonde and Mzuzu, as well as community institutions like Wells of Joy Orphan Care and Makande Resource Centre for the visually impaired, among others.

NBM plc spends MK120 million so far in ‘12 Days of Christmas’ initiative

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has donated MK120 million worth of food and non-food items to health, education and social welfare institutions across the country in the first half of its annual ‘12 Days of Christmas’ initiative.

The donations are part of the Bank’s broader K250 million festive season package, which is running from December 5 to 22.

Under the initiative, each of the 12 participating service centres is making a K20 million donation every day, with a final K30 million package scheduled at the close of the campaign.

During half of this donation period, St Martin’s Health Centre in Mwanza received medical equipment and supplies to strengthen maternal and general health services from Mwanza Service Centre, while Wells of Joy Orphan Care in Blantyre benefited from food and livelihood-support items, including sewing machines and basic commodities courtesy of Chichiri Mall Service Centre.

In the education sector, schools in Chazunda and Mpemba in Blantyre, Mpapa and Dwangwa Primary in Kasungu, and Liwonde Secondary in Machinga benefited from desks, textbooks, teaching and learning materials, as well as sports equipment, aimed at improving learning environments and promoting holistic education through Top Mandala, Kasungu, and Liwonde Service Centres respectively.

Learners with visual impairments at Makande Primary School in Ngabu, Chikwawa, also received learning and nutritional support, including Perkins brailles and food items from Nchalo Service Centre.

NBM plc Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager Akossa Hiwa said the initiative reflects the Bank’s appreciation for the communities that continue to support its growth.

“Every year, this initiative reminds us of the true meaning of the festive season, reaching out, sharing, and standing with those who need a helping hand.”

“We are deliberate in ensuring that our support responds to real needs on the ground and brings dignity and encouragement to the communities we serve,” said Hiwa.

Liwonde Secondary School learners’ representative, Faith Pasulani commended NBM plc saying the donation of desks had significantly improved learning conditions at the school.

“Previously, some learners were missing classes, especially during examinations, because they had to sit on the floor. This support has restored our dignity as learners,” said Pasulani.

Makande Primary School Head teacher, Francis Thomas said the donation had addressed a long-standing challenge at the school’s resource centre for visually impaired learners.

“We previously had only two working braillers for 24 learners. The additional brailles and food support will greatly improve both learning and welfare,” said Thomas.

NBM plc says the ‘12 Days of Christmas’ initiative remains one of its flagship CSR programmes, supporting national development through targeted investments in education, health and community wellbeing.

NBM plc donates 84 desks to Namitambo Primary School

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has donated 84 desks worth MK15 million to Namitambo Primary School in Chiradzulu to improve learning conditions for pupils.

The desks will cater for the pupils who previously sat on the floor due to a shortage of furniture.

Speaking during the handover ceremony in Chiradzulu on Thursday, NBM plc Head of Corporate Banking Division, William Chatsala, said the donation was part of the Bank’s efforts to support education through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

“This donation is about restoring the dignity of learners. One of the teachers told me that it is difficult for girls to stand and answer questions because most of them sit on the floor. With these desks, they can now learn comfortably and dream of a better life,” said Chatsala.

Chiradzulu District Commissioner, Francis Matewele, commended NBM plc for what he described as a timely and impactful gesture that will help improve the quality of education in the district.

“I would like to thank National Bank, ‘The bank of the nation’, for this donation of 84 desks for our learners in the junior classes. Most learners were sitting on the floor, but the bank has stepped in with K15 million to purchase these desks,” he said.

Matewele further appealed for a mindset change among parents and guardians, urging them to send their children to school.

Namitambo Primary School Head Teacher, Charles Majawa, expressed gratitude, saying the desks will ease seating challenges during examinations.

“Namitambo Zone is the biggest centre in Chiradzulu, and during examinations, learners faced problems because they had no desks. This support has come at the right time,” said Majawa.

The school has an enrolment of 1,221 learners.

NBM plc awards 8 outstanding employees

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has honoured eight outstanding employees with platinum awards for their exceptional contribution, innovation, and dedication to service delivery across its service centres and subsidiaries in 2024.

The awards were presented during the Bank’s Staff Recognition Awards 2024 ceremony held at the Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe under the theme ‘Celebrating Excellence, Together We Shine’.

The top-performing employees received medals, certificates, and an all-expenses-paid seven-day holiday to Dubai with their spouses.

The initiative, according to the Bank’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Harold Jiya, is part of its continued efforts to recognize and motivate staff who demonstrate excellence in their work and uphold the bank’s service standards.

Jiya said the institution’s success in meeting customer expectations relies heavily on the dedication and morale of its employees.

“This is very significant because it is our staff that deliver to make our customers happy. This is one way of appreciating our staff, but also encouraging morale and the winning culture within our people. We believe when you celebrate success, you engrave a winning culture in people’s minds,” said Jiya.

Jiya further said the motivation and recognition drive is part of the Bank’s broader strategy to build a strong service culture by encouraging employees to go beyond routine tasks and deliver memorable customer experiences.

“We want our staff to be our heroes—the people who go beyond the norm to serve our customers and excite them. We want to recognize more of our staff and celebrate more of our teams. A motivated workforce means better service for our customers, and that’s what drives us.”

“These awards inspire others to work hard. They make the whole unit or service centre vibrant and motivated to serve customers better,” he said.

In his remarks, NBM plc Head of Digital Finance Services, William Kaunda, who also serves on the Rewards and Recognition Committee, said the Bank will continue with the initiative, adding that the process for selecting the 2025 awardees is already in progress.

“Come 2026, first quarter, we should be able to know who has won the 2025 excellence awards. We have seen a huge competition and a hardworking spirit among the employees, and this is what we want as a Bank,” said Kaunda.

One of the awardees, Client Coverage Manager, Nicholas Musaiwa described the recognition as both an honour and motivation to continue excelling.

“It feels so great, thank you so much to management of NBM plc. This is a great honour and privilege,” said Musaiwa.

He attributed his success to teamwork and shared values across the organization.
