200 girls, six countries, one trophy and one big goal: kick out HPV

On the sidelines of a CAF girls football tournament in Zimbabwe this month, 200 talented young players gathered to take a shot at one major goal: ending cervical cancer.

byDerick Matsengarwodzi

At a glance

  1. As eight teams from six African nations vie for the trophy at the CAF Under-17 Girls Integrated Football Tournament in Zimbabwe this month, Goal Getters, a campaign run by UEFA, CAF and Gavi, brought the players together at a workshop on the sidelines to teach them about the human papillomavirus, cervical cancer and the vaccine that’s the best defence.
  2. “When you train, when you pass the ball. When you work as a team, you are already practising the discipline that builds strong bodies and strong futures. Part of the strength comes from making healthy choices, such as getting the HPV vaccine,” said Zimbabwe’s First Lady, Dr Auxilia Mnangagwa.
  3. Former England and Chelsea star Eniola Aluko said football had the power to inspire confidence in HPV vaccination in Africa.

At only 15, Negumbo Shekupe, a Namibian footballer, is already playing to inspire change.

One of about 200 young female players representing six countries at the CAF Under-17 Girls Integrated Football Tournament (GIFT) Zimbabwe 2025, which is running between the 8th and 18th of this month, Shekupe’s ambitions are not confined to the pitch.

As every touch, dribble and loss thrusts her closer to her dream of football fame, the shy teenager is using her nimble footwork to influence other young Africans to shoot for health. On 10 December, she swapped out her kit for blue track bottoms and white T-shirt, and joined her peers and a few famous faces at a game-changing workshop.

Goal Getters, a campaign run by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), UEFA and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, is using the energy of youth football to empower young girls to understand the importance of vaccines in securing their futures.

“Before I become professional, I am encouraging other girls of my age to get vaccinated against the human papillomavirus – which causes cervical cancer – in order to reach their dreams,” Shekupe told VaccinesWork.

A lifestyle, and the road to a better life

Known as the ‘beautiful game’, football is a lifestyle in Africa. At any given moment, in often unforgiving heat, on spare lots, potholed streets, and well-groomed pitches, hundreds of thousands of games are ongoing. Players, gleaming with sweat and alive with reckless energy, hammer home the ball – and excitedly call out top footballer’s names, as a homage or a boast, after a goal or a skilful dribble.

When you train, when you pass the ball. When you work as a team, you are already practising the discipline that builds strong bodies and strong futures. Part of the strength comes from making healthy choices, such as getting the HPV vaccine.

– Dr Auxilia Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe’s First Lady

The game’s popularity captivates billions on the continent – and that makes it a great vehicle for change.

Shekupe, a promising player, is in her own small way slowly learning that. “By getting vaccinated, young girls will live healthier, better lives and reach greater, professional heights,” she said. It’s a message she intends to carry back home.

Previous Goal Getters workshops have been hosted in Eswatini and Tanzania. Like this month’s event in Harare, the aim on those occasions was to educate girls about the human papillomavirus (HPV), the leading cause of cervical cancer worldwide, a disease that kills finds a disproportionate number of its victims in low- and middle-income countries.

Zimbabwe’s Acting Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Anxious Masuka, told the gathering that Zimbabwe first introduced the HPV vaccine in 2014, scaling the programme to the national level in 2018, mainly through school-based delivery, and recording high coverage.

But COVID-19 brought both logistical disruption and appeared to trigger a spike in misinformation, which has hampered the programme. Uptake currently hovers at just over 50%. The Ministry has embarked on an HPV vaccination revitalisation programme, while also increasing cancer screening and addressing misinformation.

Have you read?

Zimbabwe’s First Lady, Dr Auxilia Mnangagwa, a health ambassador, who officially launched the HPV vaccine in 2018, has taken a personal interest in supporting the government’s efforts.

“This tournament is not just about football; it is about your future and your health,” Dr Mnangagwa said, in a speech read out by Minister of Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Monica Mutsvangwa. “When you train, when you pass the ball. When you work as a team, you are already practising the discipline that builds strong bodies and strong futures. Part of the strength comes from making healthy choices, such as getting the HPV vaccine.”

Kick out HPV and misinformation

Prior to the event, the majority of the girls in attendance admitted to having known very little about the HPV virus, cervical cancer or the available vaccine.

But at the workshop, sessions held by various health workers left them with answers to their many questions – answers they could pass on to peers and football rivals.

Some of the information came as a surprise – a ripple of shock ran through the group as speakers explained that by age 45, an estimated four in five men and women will have had at least one HPV infection. While the body naturally clears the virus in 90% of people, in some, it can cause cancers, including cervical cancer, which kills 2,300 Zimbabwean women each year.

Football is one of the biggest unifiers: it brings people together. The fact that cervical cancer is the biggest killer of women in Africa means that it is important to correct the misinformation, to give confidence about the high HPV vaccination success rate.

– Eniola Aluko, the UEFA Together Goal Getters Ambassador and former England and Chelsea player

Crucially, they learned that there’s a shield. A single dose of HPV vaccine is recommended to girls aged 9 to 14 – in other words, before exposure – and can protect them for life.

CAF legend Amanda Dlamini, who played for South Africa’s Banyana Banyana from 2007 to 2018, spoke at the event, addressing vaccine hesitancy. “Vaccination in Africa is something that has been frowned upon [in some communities], but we encourage young girls, and equip them with enough knowledge, where health and awareness is concerned – and this is a good platform to start,” she said. “The information gained here will be shared across families, friends, and then the rest of communities are informed and inspired.”

Eniola Aluko, a star former England and Chelsea player originally from Nigeria, and the UEFA Together Goal Getters Ambassador is convinced that football can effectively address such misinformation to save lives. “Football is one of the biggest unifiers: it brings people together. The fact that cervical cancer is the biggest killer of women in Africa means that it is important to correct the misinformation, to give confidence about the high HPV vaccination success rate,” she told VaccinesWork.

Future pledge

Away from the workshop’s lively discussions, the CAF Under-17 Girls Integrated Football Tournament (GIFT) Zimbabwe 2025 roared to life.

Eight teams from six nations fielded young players – a chance for them to gain international experience and deepen their investment in women’s football. On the pitch, pouring rain paused for the occasional burst of sunshine, which beamed down on a crop of potential champions.

“Empowering young girls through football goes beyond just the game; it’s about developing their leadership skills and helping them make informed decisions that will shape their futures,” said Meskerem Tadesse, CAF Head of Women’s Football Development. “By investing in young girls through these initiatives, CAF – under the leadership of President Dr Patrice Motsepe – demonstrates a commitment to expanding opportunity and well-being.”

In Africa, Zimbabwe ranks fourth globally and regionally in cervical cancer mortality. In 2029, local screening services reached only 20% of the population.

For former top player Aluko, Goal Getters is personal. It’s about giving back to Africa, she says – and being part of an overdue turn from exploitative foreign interest, towards international investment in the continent and its people. “It’s important to see various organisations investing in Africa, and in our future. For me, for a long time, the culture has been about extracting from Africa, and now this is about investing in the future of Africa,” said Aluko.

After the tournament’s final whistle on 18 December, Shekupe and her peers will not only carry back home winning medals, new skills and memories, but also health messages to benefit future generations and nations. “The governments should look out for young girls that need to get vaccinations,” she wrote on the public Champions’ Pledge Wall. “They must also tell them about how HPV works and how they should prevent themselves against this virus.”

Mponda reflects as Bullets drop points against Mighty Tigers: 2025 TNM Super League

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-FCB Nyasa Big Bullets head coach Peter Mponda says his technical panel will sit down to review and address areas that need improvement as the team heads toward the final phase of the TNM Super League 2025 season.

Mponda made the remarks after his side was held to a goalless draw by Mighty Tigers in a league encounter played on Saturday at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre.

The match ended 0–0 despite Bullets enjoying a numerical advantage for a large part of the game after Tigers were reduced to ten men in the first half.

Tigers player Martin Msewa was shown a red card in the 33rd minute, forcing his side to play with one man down for the remainder of the contest.

Despite the setback, Tigers defended resolutely in the first half and managed to contain Bullets, who created several scoring opportunities but failed to convert.

In the second half, Bullets intensified their attacks in search of a breakthrough, piling pressure on the Tigers defence.

However, Tigers goalkeeper Lucky Tizola produced an impressive performance, making several crucial saves to deny Bullets a winning goal.

At the back, Tigers defender Alex Kambilinya stood firm and was later named Man of the Match for his outstanding defensive display.

On the other hand, Mighty Tigers head coach Trevor Kajawa said he had hoped to collect all three points but was content with a draw, considering their ongoing fight against relegation.

Kajawa said every point is crucial for Tigers as they battle to maintain their TNM Super League status.

Following the result, Mighty Tigers remain 14th on the table with 27 points from 28 matches while FCB Nyasa Big Bullets sit second with 63 points from 29 games.

Mighty Wanderers have already been crowned TNM Super League champions after thrashing Moyale Barracks 6–0, taking their points tally to 68 from 29 matches with one game remaining to conclude their season.

Mighty Wanderers end eight-year title wait with emphatic 2025 TNM Super League triumph

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Mighty Wanderers Football Club have finally brought an end to their eight-year wait for the TNM Super League title, sealing championship glory in emphatic fashion.

The Nomads secured the league crown with a game to spare following a ruthless 6-0 demolition of Moyale Barracks at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

The commanding victory not only underlined Wanderers’ dominance this season but also sent a clear message about their resurgence as one of Malawi’s football powerhouses.

Club president Thomson Mpinganjira has showered praise on the team for their resilience, discipline, and commitment throughout the campaign.

Mpinganjira described the triumph as a special moment for the club, the players, and the supporters who have waited patiently for success.

“Well done to the boys,” said Mpinganjira, expressing his pride and satisfaction with the squad’s achievement.

He added that the title could not have come at a better time, calling it a timely Christmas gift to the entire Nomads family.

The business mogul and philanthropist, who is also the club’s main sponsor, noted that the championship had been a long time coming.

According to Mpinganjira, the manner in which the title was won made it even more special for the club and its supporters.

He emphasized that winning the league in such grand style reflected the hard work put in by the players, technical panel, and management.

With the latest victory, Mighty Wanderers have now accumulated 68 points from 29 league matches this season.

Their tally places them five points clear of their closest rivals, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, effectively putting the title beyond reach.

Bullets’ hopes of closing the gap were dented after they were held to a goalless draw by Mighty Tigers in their latest fixture.

The draw proved costly for Bullets and confirmed Wanderers as champions before the final round of matches.

Attention now turns to the final league fixture, where Wanderers will host Kamuzu Barracks next weekend.

That match will serve as a celebratory occasion, as the Nomads are set to be officially crowned TNM Super

League champions.
For Mighty Wanderers supporters, the title marks the end of years of frustration and near misses.

For the club, it signals a return to the summit of Malawian football and a renewed sense of belief for the future.

The triumph is expected to further strengthen the bond between the team, its leadership, and its loyal fan base as celebrations begin across the Nomads family.

Chatama remains optimistic despite Ekhaya FC defeat to Bullets: 2025 TNM Super League

….Ekhaya 0-2 Bullets

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Ekhaya FC head coach Enos Chatama has expressed confidence in his side’s future despite suffering a 2–0 defeat to FCB Nyasa Big Bullets on Sunday afternoon in Blantyre.

The loss marked Ekhaya’s third consecutive defeat, but the coach insists the struggles are part of a learning process that will make the team stronger next season.

Speaking after the match, Chatama admitted that results have not gone his team’s way in recent outings. However, he maintained that the technical panel has already identified key areas that need improvement and believes the team will return “more dangerous” once those problems are addressed ahead of the next campaign.

The match, played at Mpira Stadium, saw Bullets start on the front foot, immediately setting the tempo with quick ball circulation and high pressing.

Ekhaya were forced to defend deep in the opening minutes as the hosts pushed numbers forward, stretching their defensive line in search of an early breakthrough.

Bullets’ persistence paid off in the 31st minute when substitute Maxwell Phodo, who had just come on for Mike Mkwate, found the back of the net. Phodo calmly finished after receiving a well weighted pass from Chikumbutso Salima, giving the hosts a deserved 1–0 lead.

Just before the halftime whistle, Bullets doubled their advantage. Ephraim Kondowe scored a fine goal in stoppage time after being set up by Phodo, capping off a dominant first-half display by the home side and sending them into the break with a comfortable 2–0 cushion.

Ekhaya attempted to regroup in the second half, while Bullets made tactical changes, including the introduction of Babatunde Adebouje in the 58th minute.

Ekhaya also responded with a series of substitutions, bringing in Kester Simbi, Vincent Salawila and later Clever Chikwata in an effort to inject fresh energy into the game.

Despite the changes, Ekhaya struggled to break down a well-organised Bullets defence. The hosts managed the game professionally, limiting Ekhaya’s chances and maintaining control as the clock ran down.

After three minutes of added time, the referee brought the match to an end with Bullets securing a solid 2–0 victory. The win further underlined their authority, while Ekhaya were left to reflect on another tough afternoon.

Maxwell Gastin Phodo was named Man of the Match for his decisive impact off the bench, contributing a goal and an assist. For Ekhaya and coach Enos Chatama, the focus now shifts to rebuilding with optimism firmly placed on a stronger and more competitive return next season.

Bullets remain on position two with 62 points from 28 matches while Ekhaya Fc stay on position 7 with 39 points from the same number of matches.

7 Best Hallmark Christmas Movies to Watch Right Now, Ranked

The Hallmark Channel is far and away the best place to find the corniest, cheesiest holiday movies.

And during the Christmas season, that’s just what many people are looking for. They want to light a Yankee candle, brew some peppermint tea and sink into a world where beautiful people get just what they want for Christmas.

Watch With Us loves a good Hallmark Christmas movie, so we decided to do a civil service and rank the very best ones you can watch right now on Hallmark+.

Did your favorites make the cut? Read on to find out!

Every Holiday Movie on TV This 2025 Season: Hallmark, Netflix and Lifetime

Humble seamstress Emily (Lacey Chabert) devotes herself to her family’s Philadelphia business, but she finds her world turned upside-down when she discovers that her European boyfriend, Leopold (Stephen Hagan), is a royal prince and heir to the throne of a small sovereign country. Leopold takes Emily back to his home to met his family for Christmas with intent to marry her. However, Leopold’s mother has other plans for him.

With some The Princess Diaries sprinkled in, A Royal Christmas hits all the notes you want from a royalty-themed Christmas Hallmark movie: everyone learns a lesson, everyone looks beautiful, love prevails and, of course, the beautiful gowns. Plus, Chabert and Jane Seymour shine in the film.

Estranged identical twin sisters Kate and Christ Lockhart (both played by Candace Cameron Brue) are stuck planning their respective holiday parties when they decide to switch things up. In order to see if one twin has things better than the other — and unbeknownst to their families — the twins swap lives, and the lessons they learn from the experience may just make for the best Christmas they’ve ever had.

Switched for Christmas makes for an adorable Christmas tale of family, friendship and learning to understand and appreciate your loved ones — and what would a Hallmark movie be without a little romance as well? It doesn’t hurt that the movie has a good sense of humor too, and with Cameron Brue playing an impressive dual role.

In a gambit to give his parents a good Christmas, speech writer Jaime (Tyler Hynes) makes a deal with his ex-girlfriend Emily (Bethany Joy Lenz) to come home with him for the holidays and pretend that they’re still together. However, it doesn’t take much before the act starts to unravel — especially when they realize their dormant feelings for one another are coming back.

This is a great Christmas Hallmark movie to watch for some silly antics, as Jaime and Emily do their best to maintain their week-long ruse in front of Jaime’s family, but it ends on a heartfelt note when the two exes realize they still love each other. Lenz and Hynes have wonderful, believable chemistry, and the film sports the perfect warm and festive holiday atmosphere.

Bachelor Zachary Stone (Brandon Routh) is only committed to one thing, and that’s being single. But when a stray cat winds up on his doorstep, he starts to realize that a little company in his day-to-day life might not be so bad. However, things take an unexpectedly romantic turn when he meets Marilee (Kimberly Sustad), a veterinary student who helps teach him how to take care of his new feline friend. Can the two make it work despite their differences?

The Nine Lives of Christmas is a fun rom-com with the perfect amount of schmaltz, made all the more enjoyable by Routh and his dynamic with Sustad. The movie is an ideal, easy Christmas watch, with some critics even feeling that the script and characters were better written than the book it was based on.

Hardworking single mom Jennifer (Brooke Burns) has become a bit of a Scrooge around Christmas, and her young son barely believes in Santa Claus. However, when her Uncle Ralph (Henry Winkler) brings over a man named Morgan (Warren Christie) whom he met on his flight, Jen and Morgan hit it off, but Morgan doesn’t like Jen’s attitude towards the holiday. For them to make it work, Morgan has to teach Jen how to get into the Christmas spirit.

While The Most Wonderful Time of the Year features a fairly familiar premise, it’s executed in a refreshing way through its smart scriptwriting, genuinely funny moments and the inclusion of Happy Days legend Henry Winkler. With fun, mismatched chemistry between Burns and Christie and a brisk script, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year is a Christmas movie highlight.

The premise of the 1987 Tom Selleck movie Three Men and a Baby gets a Christmas twist in Three Wise Men and a Baby, when three brothers named Stephen (Paul Campbell), Taylor (Hynes) and Luke (Andrew W. Walker) find themselves stuck caring for a baby over the holidays. After an abandoned infant is left at the doorstep of Luke’s work, the brothers, who have grown apart over the years, must now work together in an unexpected situation.

Well-written, genuinely funny and featuring a terrific cast, Three Wise Men and a Baby is a Hallmark holiday favorite for a reason. The characters are believable and have well-developed relationships with one another, and the movie balances the perfect mix of humor and heartfelt moments.

Screenwriter Lucy Hardgrove (Joy Lenz) has been hired to write the script for a remake of a beloved Christmas classic filmed at the historic Biltmore house. However, when Lucy’s script isn’t up to studio standards, she’s sent to the house for inspiration — where she finds herself traveling back in time to 1947 when His Merry Wife! was filmed. As she uses it as a chance to learn more about the film, she gets cozy with one of the stars, but her presence in the past threatens the film’s future.

Hallmark’s ‘Countdown to Christmas’ Lineup Includes More Than 20 New Movies

Many consider A Biltmore Christmas to be the ultimate Hallmark holiday classic, but also a fantastic Christmas movie in its own right. The plot frees itself from many tired Christmas tropes while still hitting the right beats and heartfelt moments. The music, sets, costuming and performances all come together to make A Biltmore Christmas can’t-miss during the holidays.
